A new version of Image Zoom has been posted. This version has quite a number of bug fixes and is what I consider the first really stable version in the 0.2 series. Some of the bug fixes included are:

When zoom with text was used and the text size was going from any size to 100%. The text would resize but the image would not get updated to their original size. This bug was introduced in around version 0.2.1 when I made improvements to the performance of this extension when a page zoom setting of 100% was used.

Showing of the image zoom value in the status bar. This feature has been missing since everyone upgraded to Firefox 1.5. It was a case of Image Zoom using a security hole in Firefox 1.0 to update the status bar and that hole got plugged in 1.5. The funny thing is, I didn't notice it until very recently.

I finally fixed the known conflicts with three major extensions, AIO Gestures, Mouse Gestures and Smooth Wheel. All these conflicts have been plagueing image zoom since mouse scrolling was introduced in version 0.1.7. All extensions are now mature enough that they are able to avoid each other if they are coded well. The conflict with the Answers extension still exists in this version but I have managed to track down that conflict and it will be fixed in version 0.2.6.

I changed the shortcut key for the zoom with text function to ctrl-\ from ctrl-z for the english version after many people were complaining that it conflicted with the undo command in firefox.

Also new in this version but will be hidden until version 0.3 by when I will hopefully be able to iron out the performance issues is a feature called autofit. This feature does just what "Image Fit" does except it applies "Image Fit" to any images that exceeds the dimensions of the browser. To access this function you need to set imagezoom.showAutoFitInMenu in about:config to true. There will then be an option in the View -> Image Zoom menu to autofit images. Use this with caution as it can impact performance on sites with large numbers of images. This is very handy for use in thunderbird and can be used without much risk of it affecting your performance. This will automatically reduce any photo attachments that you receive in your emails to a size where the entire photo can be seen in the email window.

Thats about it. I will post this new version to addons.mozilla.org when I get (or dont get) enough feedback that this version is stable enough.

Well, I have just finished redesigning the Image Zoom site. I was a bit tired of the look of the old site which started out as one of the default templates from an old version of movable type and I never really did much else to it in nearly 2 years. This new design was my first serious attempt at designing a template for movable type and I tried to stick to the standards as much as possible.

Some of the technical features of the new site include:

the use of valid xhtml 1.1 and css2 throughout

extensive use of em spacing on the stylesheets (change the browsers text size to see the whole site resize)

Rounded corners on most of the box elements (this wasn't that easy to get working across the 3 main browser classes)

Multiple stylesheets for user selection of the sites width and automatic initial selection based on the users screen resolution. (Controls available on the top left)

gradient backgrounds

Overall the site took me a little over a week to design from start to finish.

OK, Here we are in Esquel staying at Yamila's parents house just chilling out and going skiing occasionally and working on Yami's thesis. I have been a bit lazy lately and haven't updated this blog. A few things have happened that I will try to update here.

My 2nd 3 month period in Argentina was up and I had to travel to Uruguay otra vez to renew my visa. I now have up until the end of September but I maybe I will go to Chile while I am so close here in Esquel sometime during this month.

I finished level 2 of my spanish studies and did quite well but realise that it is a long steady road to get to the state where I can speak even a little bit fluently. I will start level 3 (Intermediate level1) at the end of this month when I return from Esquel.

I have been working on a small extensions for the Mozilla Firefox Webrowser that is named Image Zoom. I became a little bit obsessed with it there for a couple of weeks and even got a migraine because I was working too hard on it. Now it has been downloaded by over 100,000 people with that figure rising each day but at least I don't have have to work on it anymore.

I went to the north of Argentina to the provinces of Salta and Jujuy with an Australian friend of mine from the spanish class and his Argentinian Friend. I really enjoyed the trip as the culture in that part of the country is something that I was not familiar with. I can't wait to go back again but next time I will go with Yamila. Photos can be seen in the Photo Gallery.

I turned the big 30 on the 30th July. Yami organised a nice little party for me in our flat here in Buenos Aires and we invited just about everyone we know here in Buenos Aires which isn't many. It was a great way to start another decade of my life. Photos can also be seen in the Photo Gallery.

Now we are here in Esquel, It has been one week that we have been here and in that time my little sister in Australia has given birth to a beautiful baby girl named Lara, We have been skiing twice to the local ski resort named La Hoya (Photos in the gallery), and had some frustrating times working on Yami's thesis trying to get it completed. That along with the little cabin and fire that we stay in, the cold frosty mornings, the big lunches, the afternoon siestas and the snow capped mountains make the stay here in Esquel very enjoyable.

We are in Esquel for another 3 weeks before we return to the big smoke of Buenos Aires. I have less than 5 months left here in Argentina. Finally passed the half way mark. I have to say that the time hasn't flown by but has gone quite slow. At the same time I have had a great time and have never been bored at all while I have been here. I think it is because I am always doing something new. I am sure I will enjoy the next 5 months as I have the last few.

Today we cooked up some aussie Sausage Rolls. We were both missing some good old aussie tucker so we decided to try our luck in the sausage roll making department and I think all in all it was an awsome success. We did not have access or could not find any sausage mince but i think you can cheat and just use the pork mixture from whole bought pork sausages. But we didn't think about that until later, after we had made them using beef mince. But they were delish and very healthy as we used low fat mince meat. We made a total of 24 largish sausage rolls and we pigged out big time at lunch with them. We are taking a batch to our friends house tonight for a party. Luckily there will also be home made pizza there at the party. There are some more photos of the cooking process in the Photo Gallery and the recipe is posted below

Cooking Time: 50 Minutes
Serves: makes 24 large rolls

Recipe Ingredients
1kg beef mince or sausage mince
1 to 1 and ½ medium Onion
2 cups dry bread crumbs
water
800g or 4 square sheets of Puff Pastry
2 eggs but save the yolk from egg to glaze the sausage rolls before you oven bake
1 tablespoon of dried Oregano
1 teaspoon of chilli powder
A touch of dried rosemary
2 tablespoons of bbq sauce (or to taste)
I heaped teaspoon of chicken or beef stock
1/4 teaspoon Salt
Fresh grinded Pepper to taste
Milk used to glaze the sausage rolls before you oven bake

Method
1.	Preheat the oven to 180°C (or medium heat).
2.	Soak bread crumbs with water, just add enough so crumbs aren't saturated.
3. Finely chop the onions, and place in a large bowl with the mince meat, soaked breadcrumbs, chicken stock, beaten whole egg and white of another egg, salt and pepper, bbq sauce, oregano and spices. Using your fingers, thoroughly to combine the ingredients.
4.	2. Roll out the pastry to a rectangle about 50cm by 40cm. Cut into two strips lengthways. Split the mince meat mixture, and spread a generous amount along the strip of pastry.
5.	3. With your fingertips, rub a little water along the opposite edges of the pastry. Starting at the sausage meat side, roll over the pastry towards the other side, until you have formed a roll with the seam at the bottom. Gently firm down.
6.	Lightly tap the back of a knife along the top of the roll in both directions as to make a cross pattern. Trim the ends or excess bits of the roll.
7.	Cut each long roll into about 3 smaller rolls. Brush a little of the milk and yolk mixture over each one to glaze.
8.	5. Place the sausage rolls on baking dish which has been pre-oiled or sprayed with a oil substitute . Bake for 25-30 minutes, until pastry has turned a golden brown.

I have put up some photos from May in the photo gallery. These photos include the 25th May celebrations in Plaza de Mayo and some photos from a little trip we did to the city of La Plata.

25th of May is a national holiday here in Argentina to celebrate the day of the revolution. On 25th May 1810, the people of Buenos Aires declared their independance from Spain, however this was not formalised until 6 years later on the 9th July 1816 (Independance Day).

La Plata is a small city about 55km south of Buenos Aires. Yamila had a Paleo conference to attend there so I went along one of the days to have a look around the city. We stayed overnight and attended a dinner with all the Paleontologists. La Plata is the capital of the province of Buenos Aires. There are around 400,000 people inhabiting this entirely planned city with grid pattern streets joined by diagonal streets (See photo). It can get very confusing at some intersections with streets going off in all directions. La Plata is the home to the La Plata Museum of Nartural Sciences which is quite large and home to many things including a large collection of fossils and some well preserved mummies.

Well things have been a bit quiet around here lately hence no posts here or any new photos. I have been quietly going to my Spanish classes 4 times a week and Yamila has been quietly going to the museum every day to knock a little bit off her thesis each and every day. It's not like we have been doing nothing, we have been going out with friends, going to various places around the city and running 6km 4 times a week around the centenary park here in Buenos Aires. Its just that we haven't been doing those things that you do when you are on holidays that you get excited about and like to tell all your friends about. I guess we have finally settled into a bit of a routine mainly so it is easier for us to achieve our goals, mine, to learn Spanish and Yamila's, her PhD.

I had an exam yesterday for my Spanish, an oral exam, to see if I was speaking up to the correct standard to advance to the next level that starts next week. I have a written exam on Monday to equally test my written skills. I should be ok, I made a couple of mistakes in the oral but that is to be expected I think. I realised yesterday for the first time that I can actually speak in Spanish. I was on the subway with a friend from class and both of us can speak perfectly well in English even though it is not his native language. We were chatting away for about 5 minutes when I took a step back and realised that we had both been speaking in Spanish for the last 5 minutes. This was strange for me because up until a couple of weeks ago, I could speak, but I had to think of what I wanted to say in English and then translate it in my mind which is quite a bit of work for the brain. But yesterday I was just chatting away, still finding it a bit difficult because of my limited vocabulary, but still, I was thinking in Spanish. So it just seems to be happening, a bit like magic. I still have a long way to go, but it is very satisfying for me learning to speak another language.

We also got the cable hooked up as well so we have access to many channels including some that show aussie tv shows such as The Block, RPA, Water Rats and a few movies, but no sport from australia which I miss tremendously. I'm looking forward to seeing a bit of the local tele and hopefully I may learn a bit of spanish at the same time.

Last friday Yamila and I made a trip across the Rio de la Plata to the small village of colonia in Uruguay. The reason, I had to renew my tourist visa here in Argentina which meant leaving the country so i could re-enter. We took a took a pre-packaged day tour which meant we left left Buenos Aires at 9am, toured colonia, visited a farm and had some lunch before returning around 10pm. The trip across the river is about 3 hours so we didn't have much time in colonia itself, but enough time to buy some very very nice cheese and dulce de leche from the farm and to learn quite a lot about this historic town. The photos are in the photo gallery under the April 2004 album.

We all went to see a game of soccer last night. We went to see Argentina vs Ecuador play in a world cup qualifier match. The ground was not full and game was not great, but it was a good experience seeing my first soccer match in South America. Ecuador are not a very good team and hence the match was quite boring. The end result Argentina 1 Ecuador 0. I have some photos which are posted in the March 2004 Album in the Gallery.

This was my first soccer match in South America. I didn't have any expectations because usually if you have expectations, more often than not, you are disappointed. We arrived to the ground via taxi to find quite a few people but not a great deal starting to line up to get some tickets. The tickets were between $12 -> $25 australian and after lining up for about 15 minutes we purchased the tickets for about $18. But by the time we had gotten to the front of the queue, the line up was over 10 times longer and it had grown by this much in just 15 minutes. We were so lucky to get there when we did.
Next we headed from the ticket office to the ground and on the way had to be searched for weapons etc etc by the police. The number of people around the ground was much more than near the ticket office and we found it a little hard to get to where we were going. After finding our way to the gate, we started the climb up to where our seats were. They were near the top of this 60,000 (estimated) seat stadium so it was quite a climb. We got to our level and went to purchase things to drink and eat. I was quite surprised to find only coke and very simple hamburgers to be the only things on sale, no beer.
We got to our seats and found out that we had a pretty good view of the stadium, however we were a little too far back or too high to experience the full effect of the atmosphere in the stadium. What happened next was a little disappointing. Ecuador being only a mediocre team, we found that the standard of football not to be the greatest and game was a little boring. No one scored in the first half and even though Argentina was playing all over the top of Ecuador, Ecuador did have a few chances and could have easily scored a goal or two.
It wasn't until halfway through the second half that we saw our first goal which was scored by Argentina and we had a pretty good view of it as we were directly behind the scorer. So the score was now 1-0 but the crowd didn't explode like I thought they might as I think everyone was a little bored with the game. So the rest of the game passed and the score remained at 1-0 until we left 2 minutes before the end to beat the rush. Getting out wasn't much of a problem because we had left early so we proceeded to head to some establishment for refreshments.
We arrived at this trendy looking pub and walked inside to find these booth with a table and a beer tap at each table. The idea was that you could pull your own beers which would add up on a meter and then you pay by the litre at the end. We all thought this was pretty cool so we decided we would take a table. After waiting for about 20 minutes and having decided on what we were all going to eat/drink, we still had not been served. We were all very thirsty at this point and were talking about leaving due to the bad service. After another 5 minutes we were attended to and the first thing we asked was how long would the food take if we ordered some. We were told it would take a while because they were a bit behind. This was enough for us, we decided to leave as we couldn't wait any longer. So we never got to try the self service tap beer in the end as we went onto another coffee shop.

On Monday I started my spanish lessons. I have a lesson from 2pm - 4pm from Monday to Thursdays. I think that maybe I am in a level that is too simple for me and have asked to go up to the next level. I have to wait for a decision on that. In the meantime I will continue to go to level 1 classes. My spanish has improved so much over the last couple of weeks as my confidence level has improved. There are about 10 people in my class and they are from all over the world, ie Germany, Scotland, Australia, Korea, Denmark, Israel, Brasil, France, China and USA.
