Image Zoom 0.2.5 Released

A new version of Image Zoom has been posted. This version has quite a number of bug fixes and is what I consider the first really stable version in the 0.2 series. Some of the bug fixes included are:

  • When zoom with text was used and the text size was going from any size to 100%. The text would resize but the image would not get updated to their original size. This bug was introduced in around version 0.2.1 when I made improvements to the performance of this extension when a page zoom setting of 100% was used.
  • Showing of the image zoom value in the status bar. This feature has been missing since everyone upgraded to Firefox 1.5. It was a case of Image Zoom using a security hole in Firefox 1.0 to update the status bar and that hole got plugged in 1.5. The funny thing is, I didn't notice it until very recently.
  • I finally fixed the known conflicts with three major extensions, AIO Gestures, Mouse Gestures and Smooth Wheel. All these conflicts have been plagueing image zoom since mouse scrolling was introduced in version 0.1.7. All extensions are now mature enough that they are able to avoid each other if they are coded well. The conflict with the Answers extension still exists in this version but I have managed to track down that conflict and it will be fixed in version 0.2.6.
  • I changed the shortcut key for the zoom with text function to ctrl-\ from ctrl-z for the english version after many people were complaining that it conflicted with the undo command in firefox.
Also new in this version but will be hidden until version 0.3 by when I will hopefully be able to iron out the performance issues is a feature called autofit. This feature does just what "Image Fit" does except it applies "Image Fit" to any images that exceeds the dimensions of the browser. To access this function you need to set imagezoom.showAutoFitInMenu in about:config to true. There will then be an option in the View -> Image Zoom menu to autofit images. Use this with caution as it can impact performance on sites with large numbers of images. This is very handy for use in thunderbird and can be used without much risk of it affecting your performance. This will automatically reduce any photo attachments that you receive in your emails to a size where the entire photo can be seen in the email window.

Thats about it. I will post this new version to addons.mozilla.org when I get (or dont get) enough feedback that this version is stable enough.

Jason, it's a great extension, and the help pages are superb. I'm writing it up for a quicky article at communitymx.com 'cause i like it so much. Keep up the good work! :)

I just updated to Firefox 1.5 and wanted to update your very useful Image Zoom to 0.2.6. I downloaded the file to my Desktop, but, alas, the installation has me going in circles. Here are some of the instructions I have come across -

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/139/
How to Install in Thunderbird:
1. Right-Click the link above and choose "Save Link As..." to Download and save the file to your hard disk.
2. In Mozilla Thunderbird, open the extension manager (Tools Menu/Extensions)
3. Click the Install button, and locate/select the file you downloaded and click "OK"

Unfortunately, I get an "Extensions" pop up with a number of [non working] options, but there is no "Install" button. The pop up lists Image Zoom 0.2.6 [which is already downloaded and waiting to be installed] on a line with a [non working] "Update Now" button.

Another try at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/139/ -
I click the "Install Now (69 KB)" button and am informed by Firefox -
"Software installation is currently disabled. Click Edit Options... to enable it and try again."
I do this, but can find no option to enable software installation.

Elsewhere I read -
How do I enable software installation?
Software installation is enabled by default. In Firefox versions 1.0.7 and earlier (and Thunderbird) there is a preference in the options menu to enable or disable software installation.
In Firefox 1.5 this preference still exists, but it is now accessed through about:config. Find xpinstall.enabled and set it to true by double clicking on it or by right clicking and choosing reset.
If this doesn't enable software installation, or you need more information, please seek support for the program you're trying to install extensions to.

So this brings me to you. I have no clue what "about:config" or "xpinstall.enabled" is [tho I used WinXP Windows Explorer to search]. Can you help?

Disregard previous post... just found instructions [Win XP only?] -
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_%28Firefox%29#Software_installation_disabled
Firefox 1.5: If you previously disabled this option and then updated to Firefox 1.5, the disabled setting will be carried over. Since the option to enable software installation no longer exists in the UI, you will need to use about:config to reset the "xpinstall.enabled" preference to the default "true" value (bug 310737). These step-by-step instructions should fix the problem:
Software installation disabled
1. Type about:config in the Location Bar and hit enter.
2. Type xpi in the Filter box and find xpinstall.enabled in the list.
3. Make sure its value is set to "true" (double-click will toggle).

Oh Great! Zoom just installed itself and wiped out my bookmarks and homepage settings. Thanks a bunch.
