Quiet Times
Well things have been a bit quiet around here lately hence no posts here or any new photos. I have been quietly going to my Spanish classes 4 times a week and Yamila has been quietly going to the museum every day to knock a little bit off her thesis each and every day. It's not like we have been doing nothing, we have been going out with friends, going to various places around the city and running 6km 4 times a week around the centenary park here in Buenos Aires. Its just that we haven't been doing those things that you do when you are on holidays that you get excited about and like to tell all your friends about. I guess we have finally settled into a bit of a routine mainly so it is easier for us to achieve our goals, mine, to learn Spanish and Yamila's, her PhD.
I had an exam yesterday for my Spanish, an oral exam, to see if I was speaking up to the correct standard to advance to the next level that starts next week. I have a written exam on Monday to equally test my written skills. I should be ok, I made a couple of mistakes in the oral but that is to be expected I think. I realised yesterday for the first time that I can actually speak in Spanish. I was on the subway with a friend from class and both of us can speak perfectly well in English even though it is not his native language. We were chatting away for about 5 minutes when I took a step back and realised that we had both been speaking in Spanish for the last 5 minutes. This was strange for me because up until a couple of weeks ago, I could speak, but I had to think of what I wanted to say in English and then translate it in my mind which is quite a bit of work for the brain. But yesterday I was just chatting away, still finding it a bit difficult because of my limited vocabulary, but still, I was thinking in Spanish. So it just seems to be happening, a bit like magic. I still have a long way to go, but it is very satisfying for me learning to speak another language.
